Relationship between Aspirinesterase Activity and Various Liver Function Tests in the Patients with Congested Liver
Joung Nam-Gi

Abstract
The activity of the serum aspirinesterase was measured in 54 cases of congested liver due to congestive heart failure and a comparative study with the conventional liver, function tests including Bromsulphalein (BSP) retention test.
The severity of congestive heart failure was determined according to.the degree of clinical symptoms and measurements of peripheral venous pressure.
The results were as follows;
1) The mean value of serum aspirinesterase activity in severe congestive heart failure (44 cases) was 127.0¡¾33.8 A. U. and abnormal enzyme activity was found in 88.6% of the cases, while the mean value of the BSP retention in same patients was 11.6¡¾8.9% and abnormal retention was observed in 68.20 of the cases.
2) The mean value of serum aspirinesterase in the mild congestive heart failure (8 cases) was 166.0 ¡¾55.6 A. U. and abnormal enzyme activity was found in 50% of the cases. However, the mean value of BSP retention test was 5.5¡¾5.2% and abnormal retention was detected in 37.5% of the cases.
3) In fifteen cases who were studied with the follow-up interval during the treatment, the serial mean values of serum aspirinesterase were 122.5¡¾ 26.3 A. U. before treatment and 148.9¡¾44.3 A. U. after improvement (p<0.05).
4) The occurence of abnormality of aspirinesterase activity and BSP was proportional- to the degree of physical findings such as cardiomegaly circulation time and venous pressure which reflect the severity of congestive heart failure.
It may be concluded that the activity of the serum aspirinesterase. might reflect the functional derangments of congested liver in congestive heart failure, which appeared to be more sensitive than that of BSP retention test.
The enzyme activity showed the tendency for a return to normal level with the active managements for the failing heart.
